Are you sure it's the speed control? If the unit "dogs out" as you walk or just plain stops it is more likely the motor.

Most Weslo have the speed control in one of 2 places... either integrated into the motor or on a circuit

Hey there, i got one for £280(ish) from argos, it was York Fitness, it's reliable and can hold i good weight. I've had it for about 8 months, and lost 70lb so far using it nearly everyday..it's also easy to use.

Usually the key is there as a safety feature. You attach the string to you and insert the key so if you fall the treadmill will shut off. The treadmill will not work without the key inserted. You can go to the Weslo website and order a new key.
