On the fence- lower joint impact is the goal as is saving space so I think that = elliptical unless there are any compelling arguments/benefits for the treadmill.

If you want lower joint impact, then go for the elliptical. It also has a smaller footprint than treadmills, unless you have one of those folding ones.
