Students provide real-life services for the real-life experience

It all began with an '82 Chevy van and a little automotive magic from students at Kernahan Park Secondary School.

Back in 1991, the high school's landscape program was but a small seed planted by teacher Joe Merkies. The idea was to give students hands-on experience and high school credits. The classroom would be the great outdoors. And the students would come to class not with notebooks but steel-toed boots.

Back then, he started with a $4,000 loan from the District School Board of Niagara. That pretty much bought him the Chevy (it required a little automotive TLC) and a trailer to pull behind it.

In the early days, the inventory of equipment was pretty basic. A couple lawn mowers. A wheelbarrow. And a whole lot of enthusiasm.
