Don't let the holidays weigh you down

Thanksgiving might be over but the holiday season is just beginning, and you know what that means: eating like there's no tomorrow!

The period between Thanksgiving and New Year's appropriately named "the binge season" is notorious for weight gain. Even if you put on only a pound or two each holiday season, you may, according to the National Institutes of Health, carry this extra weight for years to come.

There is some truth to the saying "A moment on the lips leads to a lifetime on the hips." That's why it is so important to pay attention to what we eat and how we burn the extra calories during this time of the year. This is certainly not the time to become sedentary.

You might think that eating sensibly during the season that is so focused on food and drink is an impossible task. And so is fitting exercise into your hectic schedule.

It's all comes down to good planning, a dash of motivation, and a pinch of self-control. It may not be easy when you are surrounded by all this delicious food, but you will be rewarded on Jan. 1 when you look in the mirror and realize you haven't gained a single pound.

Tips for holiday weight management:

-Watch what you eat: If you regularly follow a calorie-restricted diet rich in lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy and whole grains, a little splurge once in a while probably won't hurt you assuming you pay attention to portion control, don't reach for second helpings, and avoid the most caloric and fat-laden food and drink on the table.

-Make time for fitness: No matter how busy or tired you are, don't even think of skipping exercise. Why is it so important? Physical activity will help you burn off extra calories if you over-indulge. Even if you don't consume food in excess, exercise will help control and maintain your weight.

-Interval training is the most time-efficient workout that will burn lots of calories and fat, and still allow you to enjoy all the festivities. It only takes 20 minutes or so three times a week so you can fit it into your schedule even during the busiest time.

-A fitness instructor can help you make the most of your interval training session. An instructor can help you by creating a set of exercises that will boost your metabolism and burn fat for dramatic results during the holiday season and beyond.

-If it's in your house, it's in your mouth. Give your willpower and your waistline a break and refuse to keep holiday leftovers in your home. The stress of the holidays will make it even harder to fight cravings with willpower. Avoid the fight with yourself and send the desserts home with someone else.

Josef Brandenburg is a Washington, D.C.-area certified fitness expert with 11 years of experience. In 2004, he started The Body You Want personal training fitness program, which specializes in weight loss and body transformations for busy people. Show And Go Training – Strength Training Workout Plan–Bowflex ...

Do you have doubts that your strength training is not effective? If you are spending most of your time on gym machines trying to lose weight then you might not be getting the most out your workouts. What you need is an effective strength training workout plan to maximize weight loss and at the same time build up overall strength. Below are some examples of these workouts that will help you achieve what you want for your physique. The exclusive use of gym machines will make you miss out on other exercises that will work out more muscles, save you time, and burn more calories. A great workout example is doing squats. This type of workout targets the lower body’s major muscles. There are different types of squats you can choose from that you can do at home or at the gym. There is the assisted squat, the barbell, one-legged, and the chair squat. Access Show And Go Training! Dead lifts should also be included in your strength training workout plan. What makes this workout great is that it targets the abs, the back, hamstring and the butt area. If you have back problems in the back however extra care is needed when doing dead lifts. Doing pushups is another great compound strength workout because it targets a lot of muscles. It is great for the core because it includes a lot of stabilizer muscles. This workout builds up the chest, triceps and the shoulder muscles. Your lower body also gets a workout when you do pushups on your toes. Remember that when you build muscles you also burn the fat that is in your body. Having a sound strength training workout plan will greatly increase the effectiveness of building up your physique and lose weight at the same time. Stop wasting your time on gym machines alone. It is time for you to break free of them and do some real workouts. Access Show And Go Training!
