I have no access to a gym and cannot go out and buy any fitness equipment. What exercises can I do at home that don't require any equipment?
Try a workout DVD as these videos can be good as they will show you how to do an aerobic workout and you dont need much (if any) equipment to follow it. Also exercises like lunges, skipping, star jumps, squats, crunches etc dont require any...

I'm not sure if I should join a gym or build my own. Could you guys compare the general costs associated with purchasing a type of fitness equipment versus joining a gym.
Build a gym. Fitness gyms are way expensive. They charge like 400-1000 dollars a year for use of their facility, plus there's a monthly fee for the membership. It'll pay out in the long run if you build your own gym.

Personal Training: Was it Worth It?
So I made it. After four weeks of meeting with a personal trainer twice a week (while also attending a bootcamp exercise class once a week), I survived… and I loved it.
At first, the idea of having that much intense exercise each week sounded daunting, schedule-wise as much as physically. But once I set the schedule and there was no moving it, it was actually pretty easy to let the rest of life flow around it. So lesson number one, you can always make the time if you really want to, especially if you have someone holding you accountable. My instructor was showing up at my door so there was no getting out of it.
Lesson number two, it doesn’t have to take a lot of room or equipment to get an intense full-body workout. Kristin, with YBY Fitness and Nutrition , showed up at my door some days with nothing but music and a few exercise bands. Other days she brought dumbbells ranging from three to eight pounds, or an exercise ball or a bosu ball. All of these are easy and fairly inexpensive home-gym equipment to have on hand.
The Home Gym Advantage
One important part of our lives is our fitness. Besides keeping us fit, it also makes sure that we stay healthy. With a gym in almost every corner of the city, we basically have the opportunity to stay in shape anytime we want to. But how many people do you know have entered a gym and stuck with it? I’m guessing only a few. It is not free to get in a gym. It can cost annual membership fees and they charge other fees when we use other perks that they are offering. This is actually one of the many reasons why we drop out of gyms. So if you can’t come to the gym, why not have the gym come to you?
You can set up a home gym at your convenience. You just have to find the budget and space for it. See it as an investment. The great thing about it is you don’t have to think about yearly fees that you have to pay. It may cost more upfront than getting a gym membership but, in the long run, you will save a lot of money. After you make that one payment, you are free to use the equipment anytime. You get the chance to pick equipment suite for your fitness level too. You get to save money on gas too since you don’t have to think about driving to the gym to workout.
