Your Disposable Income - Gym Membership or Not?

With the economy crashing around us, people walking away from their homes in droves, gas up $2 per gallon and people shopping in discount food stores so they can afford to feed their kids, how do you feel about joining a gym?

Have you been affected in any major way by the economy? What do you use your disposable income for?

If you had a suggestion for the manager of a fitness center to bring in more revenue in the way of members or personal training, what would you suggest?

Your good health is your most important asset. Sound body, sound mind. If you can't afford a gym, you should still exercise. Besides getting a good education, a health club membership is the most important investment you can make in yourself.

So far the economy has not impacted me. I'm trying to save my disposable income. But the two luxuries I afford to myself is my winter ski trips and my share of baseball season tickets.

How long before the michigan economy recovers?

I cant stand this, im 21 years old and havent had a job for over 3 years. The last job i had was at a restaraunt that had to shut down do to not having any business. Im not exaclty the most charming individual, but im a real person, im not superficial and i treat everyone equally. Ive been applying for jobs the past couple years every now and then with no avail, i really tried HARD the past few months but it seems you can only get a minimum wage job by "knowing" people i guess.

Right now my dad works in Mississippi because the BIG 3 over here failed and fired most their employee's, he works for NISSAN and its expensive for him to live down thier. My family is doing fine on our house but we BARELY have spare money, really only enough for food and some leisure activities. We live in Farmington Hills which is a superb about 20-30 miles away from detroit.

So anyway i was buying some food at this store nearby and i saw this lady talking to the cashier guy. She said so how are you today? and he was like Oh im good, just keepin busy u know... I work 2 jobs now and im a junior in college but just takin some time off now. He seemed like such a cocky little dipshit nerd, who was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. and the ladies were like OH thats SOOO good and rambled on about their stupid lives, while holding up the line as well which really pissed me off. I swear to god i felt like i wanted to jump over to him and stomp his head to the ground and bitchslap these old stupid ladies. So finally after this nerd is done talking to these dumb old ladies, he just walks around his post a few seconds and i hold out the packaged food i want to buy, he is still standing their (so pissed off now you cant imagine), so im basically staring at this guy and he is slowly moving around in a fixed position. I decide to just put it down and he rings it up, and watd u know... no thank you, have a nice day sir. I have a 6-pack with a near perfectly built body (working out a lot now to become a fitness model) so it mightve come across as a little intimidating, but i swear to god i cant stand this SHIT-HOLE state with these ASS-HOLE people EVERYWHERE!!! Having no job is making be CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!!!@#

Its driving me nuts everyone, i cant find a job even working for minimum fucking wage. I have so much spare time that i work out 7 days a week and go to the gym 1-2 times a day. I weight train 10 times a week now for 1 hour sessions. I have no spare money and have to rely on my family for money pretty much. My only hope now is becoming a fitness model within the next 1-2 months, i know it doesnt pay that great but its better then nothing seriously... I cant bring myself to getting a girlfriend without having a job so.. i gotta atleast try this right?

I just wanted to share my thoughts i guess, and im curious if anyone has any ideas about when the michigan economy is going to recover? I know the BIG 3 are bankrupt, but are they being replaced with anything? Will the economy here EVER recover? Any info on that will help and anyone got any ideas how to be self-employed? Like a project i could do by myself, like Rebuilding a home and selling it? Anything i can do myself and make decent money, i dont mind putting a lot of work into something either, so any ideas appreciated. Thank u for hearing me out everyone!

MI. has been a hell hole since I started going up there, and looking at who the people in the state vote into office it looks like it will be that way for awhile. Don't get me wrong the people of MI. are good people, I have family there in Detroit, it is just your leadership sucks to high holy hell.

What are you mom's doing during the bad economy?

Since the economy has turned bad, have you mom's been looking on ways to save money, make more money, or have you just been spending the same amount of money as before?
Also what are things that you cannot live without during these bad economic times for yourselfs or your babies?
If you are still out buying things for your babies, what are you buying and where? Like off the internet or in stores?

We have cut way back on our spending, eating out less and plus I do a lot more looking for things on the internet since I am staying at home.( me staying at home instead of working put $200 extra dollars in our budget for a month!)
Also, I will look for deals on food and clothes, but I still love my gym membership and my tanning! If I had to, I would give those up, but those are my only me times, so it is very much enjoyed!

I am trying to live life to the fullest. Even if that means having a picnic in our backyard because we can't go out to eat! I do alot of shopping off of ebay. For the most part, they are people like me trying to make a buck or two. Of course, my son's needs come way before mine. But that still doesn't mean I can't buy myself a good book or a couple of nice shirts. I am doing a lot of cooking at home now (and I found I really like it too). I freeze a lot of what I cook or we eat leftovers. Right now the thing that I can not live without is buying a few flowers to plant in containers and in the flower bed. Oh yeah, plus my Dove Dark chocolate!!!!! :D

They just noticed the economy is going bad, when did you notice?

My parents own and I manage a small linen and uniform service. In 2000, my first year on the job (still in H.S.) we processed just over 3,300 tons of linen (you thought you had a lot of laundry). By 2002, it was down to about 3,000 tons and was 3,000-3,100 tons per year through 2006. In 2007 it was down to less than 2,500 tons.
We've had lay offs. We have more clients now than we did in 2002, but their volume is way down. We've absorbed most of the energy cost increases and passed little on to our customers. They are motels, restaurants, nursing homes, truck stops, gyms, tanning, hair salons, etc.
Every April things start to ramp up, not really this year. There isn't a competitor taking business from us. Truck stops offer free showers with diesel fill ups. Less stuff being sold, fewer trucks on the road. Fewer free showers, less linen to process.
It is hilarious to hear the media and politicians discover what we realized 10 months ago. More lay off are coming.

It was inevitable given the circumstances: dot.com bubble burst, people cashed out of stocks and bought property, property values sky-rocketed, real estate bubble burst and people stuck owning property they owe more on that it is worth, and some of them have to move or lose their jobs.

When did I notice personally? Last year when I almost lost my job due to cutbacks. I am one of the most productive people in my field and on my account, and I almost lost my job.

Photo Shoot at A Gym Membership | Dori's Shiny Blog

So on Saturday, Missy announced some exciting news on her blog: Shape magazine contacted her to do a little feature about her weight loss a few years ago! They wanted to do a photo shoot of Missy doing an exercise she regularly does, and after the Core Fusion location didn’t work out, they decided to take pictures in a spin studio instead. The magazine told her to bring some friends along to pose as spin classmates. Missy asked me, her sister and our friend Melanie — and of course I said yes!

Early Saturday morning, I woke up and got dressed in an unusual pairing: workout clothes and full face of makeup. I walked over to the gym, which was conveniently at a New York Sports Club just a few blocks from the boy’s. I even stopped at Juice Generation along the way for a fresh pressed green juice. I arrived at the gym before the other girls, so it was just the NYSC employee, the camera men and me! It felt strange to be alone in a large gym. It also felt strange to see myself looking so even skinned and lip glossed in gym mirrors!
