What fitness equipment is best to own?

I am interested in buying either an elliptical bike or cross trainer or a treadmill.
I am wondering which one will give me the best results and which brands are good?
Also if you have rented a piece of fitness equipment before was it worth it compared to buying it straight out?
I want to lose weight, improve fitness and tone muscles. I can't go out walking , jogging etc as I have 3 young children. Need something I can do at home.

you didn't state what kind of results you are looking for so i can only answer from my point of view i own dumbbells and a ab ball, i am able to work out every muscle with those two items and they both are easy to store and use, i also have a jump rope from when i don't want to go out running,

50lb Dumbbells 56.00
Ab Ball 24.99
Jump Rope 6.99

Being able to workout from home and not have a big piece of equipment that i am only going to use twice and paid a lot of money for in the living room taking up space-priceless

What site can I enter personal statistics to find the best fitness equipment for me?

I'm 6'8" and 300lbs, trying to find info on fitness equipment for people my size. Specifically looking for recumbent bikes anbd elipitical machines.

Hi there

I have worked in fitness equipment retail for 8 years now and have a Bachelor of Physical Education. To answer your question, it does not matter which peice of equipment you use as long as you're comfortable on it as all cardio equipment is mean't for weight loss or cardiovascular excercise. Ellipticals are good because they are low to no impact while still providing weight bearing activity to keep the bones strong. Problem with ellipticals is that you need to be able to put forth $2500 or more to get one that feels good, is biomechanically correct and can handle your "bigger" stature as you'll want something well built. Recumbent bikes are much cheaper, will provide you with cardio/weight loss excercise and are easy to use. Ellipticals are more efficient than the bikes because you use your entire body meaning more calories expended over a shorter period of time. People also tend to get bored on the bikes. My suggestion is to go to a gym and try them both before you buy. Last thing you want is to buy something that you don't like. As for a website, I am unsure of that. Try some of the fitness equipment manufacturing sites such as many times they will have helpful hints on buying the equipment. www.precor.com, www.iamstrong.ca (this one is more towards health and lifestyle and has testiomonials).
Hope this helps!

How do you know what is the best type of fitness equipment and the best place to buy it from?

I like the bowflex commercials and so forth for example. Plus the pilates gym stuff looks good and then the treadmill or cycles look good. I see them for sale everywhere! Qvc has some of the same products as advertised on the products own webpage for example. So where is the best place or store to buy equipment from? I see many at Wal-Mart, Sears, online... everywhere. I want one for strength training/toning and one for cardio. I don't want to spend a fortune, but I want to invest in something that will last and give me good results.

I needed cardio with little to no impact so I purchased a Gazelle Elite Glider (Fitness Quest) I really like it & I can do toning on it as well.
My husband really likes his Total Gym Platinum because it uses his own body weight as resistance.
He almost got the Bowflex, but they were recalled because the bows had broken of some of them & they are big & bulky. They almost need a room to themselves.
As for choosing the right one, I think it is up to you & what you are looking for in the equipment you buy. Also, the room you have to accomodate the equipment. And price of course....

What home fitness equipment offers the best results?

I want to purchase a single piece of workout equipment that offers aerobic activity but will also tone muscle. I want to burn fat and calories and tone my muscles without bulking up.

I have been running on a treadmill in our apartment complex gym, and love the results. But I was wondering if something like an elliptical machine would offer the same results or better without the wear and tear on my body caused by running?

All you need are dumbbells. Use light dumbbells to make the treadmill harder. You can also do high intensity interval training like that. Then with heavier dumbbells you can do a full body basic weight lifting routine a couple times a week to tone your muscles. Don't worry, you can't bulk up without steroids. You will gain some muscle, but you won't look big at all. It will also help you gain bone density and keep your joints healthy. This will help you avoid osteoperosis and stiff joints when you get older.

I do like elipticals. I do my intervals on those. You just switch between a high and low setting. Why not get get both. Adjustable dumbbells are cheap anyway.

  • Is an exercise bike a good way to lose weight?

OK I really need to get my body into shape. I’m 30 years old and weight 185 lbs. I’m wanting to lose about 30 lbs in about 4 months. I just bought an exercise bike. I’m wanting to know how often should I ride this bike and how many calories should i burn on a daily basis. Also what is a good food diet. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.
