Economy taking toll on exercise spending
For those who like to use fitness equipment -- cardio or strength-training -- that can be pricey. A new survey by the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association found that U.S. wholesale sales of fitness gear and equipment sold for use in home, clubs and institutions was $4.2 billion in 2008, down from $4.7 billion the year before.
Officials of the association, a global organization representing sports manufacturers, retailers and marketers, said people didn't have as much money to buy new equipment as in past years or as much free time to exercise regularly.
But the good news is its online survey of 41,500 households in the 2009 edition of the annual Tracking the Fitness Movement found more than 60 percent of Americans exercise regularly. (That's higher than most estimates, so you have to wonder if people who exercise tended to respond more often to the survey or if they estimated their exercise a little "high.") Walking, using treadmills, working out with hand weights, running/jogging and using weight/resistance machines were the top five fitness activities in 2008.
