Piqued by a comment for one of the sunset photos about prolonged sunsets and sunrises around the times of the equinoxes, I took a look at the durations of evening twilight at various times of the year in Santa Barbara. Just in case any sunrise/sunset watchers are interested, here's what I found.
For the duration, I used the time between the setting of the apparent upper limb of the Sun (assuming a flat horizon), and the end of astronomical twilight, when the Sun is 18 degrees below the horizon. It turns out that there is a major peak in the duration of twilight of around 1 hour and 46 minutes just after Summer Solstice in late June, and a minor peak of around 1 hour and 30 minutes just before Winter Solstice. There is a minimum of around 1 hour and 23 minutes in mid-October, just after the Autumnal Equinox, and another minimum of about 1 hour and 24 minutes in early March, just before the Vernal Equinox.
