I am looking to purchase an affordable elliptical machine so that I can lose weight in my home and not spend a lot of money at the gym. I believe that I would be able to spend about $400 on this. If any of you have suggestions on brands/models...

Unfortunately, I have an old knee injury, and thus, the only machines which are comfortable for me are the Precor machines, which are super expensive.
So, the gym for me. Oh well, life's a *itch.
I'm looking for something on the smaller side since I don't have a lot of room. Any recommendations?
What sort of price range are you looking for? The Horizon EX22 is a pretty small budget unit for around $500. Stay away from the Icon Fitness brands from Sears or Costco (Proform, Epic, Weslo) because they have a high breakdown rate.
I went to the "sports authority" shop and looked at the ones they have in there and I felt they were really bad compared to the ones at the gym.
I got an elliptical machine a year ago, and it has helped transform my body.
I have also used the ones at the gym.
In my opinion, there's three different elliptical types:
Gym quality
Home quality

it needs to be on a hard floor, if you have a carpet under it it needs to be very thin. A cement floor is even better

True, the apartment’s top level was no larger than a generously sized jail cell. But you could stumble down to lower levels via a rickety spiral staircase, and the roomy deck could surely support two vegan jockeys and an all-steel hibachi.

The best advice I can give is to try out both machines before making a decision. Bring your running shoes to a specialty fitness store, such as At Home Fitness, and give both machines a thorough tryout.
