I bought a used ProForm brand elliptical trainer for about $100. I found it in the local recycler paper, but you might be able to check out Craigslist. ProForm makes excellent exercise equipment. I would highly recommend buying used if you can. It saved me a couple hundred dollars and the hassle of assembling the equipment.

There are quite a few decent machines under $1000, but not many at all under about $500. Some of the top brands would be Horizon (the EX33 is a great value), the Schwinn 418 for a bit more, any of the New Balance machines and the Fitnex units (the best warranty you can get in a home unit). As with treadmills, for ellipticals stay away from anything produced by Icon Fitness -- that includes Proform, Image and Weslo. There units tend to require more servicing than any I've seen from other manufacturers.

I have heard of NordicTrack AudioStrider 990 for $1000 which is the best value according to consumer reports. Does anyone have experience with this? Can you recommend any other ones? Should I buy used?
try doing a websearch on weightless exercises, they are free, not equipment needed and are very eliptical in nature
I workout probably 1.5 hours a day.. i run 4 miles & do elliptical & bike.. What should my calorie intake be? I usually eat under 1000 & i have lost 6.6 pounds in 9 days.
go to http://www.mypyramid.gov. Enter the information that they ask you you (height/age/gender) and it will give you the recommended caloric intake and also break it down into the necessary food portions for each group. And as a side note, under 1000 calories sounds too dangerously low of a caloric intake.
I work out 5 days a week (m-f).
I use the elliptical burning no less than 500 calories a day plus my body's natural 2000 calories a day.
I eat under 1000 calories a day.
YET I am still not losing what I used to lose every week the last time I was in the diet and exercise mode.
What is going on?
You could be over-doing it. Your body can automatically respond to this "stress" that you are putting it under by storing every single calorie it can. The key is to find a balance. You may also want to do something else besides the elliptical. I never lost much weight using one of those. You also need to make sure that you have your heart rate up for at least 30 minutes. Ask a nutritionist and a trainer for help on creating a better plan for yourself.
